Chef's Training

Internship & Career Services

The objective of the 100-hour internship portion of our Chef's Training Program is to give students a chance to apply the skills they’ve acquired and continue the learning process under the supervision of a culinary professional in a real-life kitchen environment.

The internship also allows us to evaluate the effectiveness of the training we provide. Through feedback from both cooperating sites and students, we can implement changes in curriculum or teaching methods that seem appropriate in order to achieve the ultimate goal of student employment.

Because the Natural Gourmet is a small school, we can offer students personalized counseling sessions to determine the best fit for internship. Goals, interests, skills and dietary preferences play a key role in selecting an internship. Since many of our students come from out of state, geographic locations are also taken into consideration. Students may arrange internships without the assistance of the school if they so choose, as long as the site is approved by the Internship Coordinator.

The vast majority of internships take place in restaurants. There are a few other options, but we strongly recommend interning at a restaurant, even if that's not a student's ultimate goal. The following list represents a small sampling of establishments we work with.

CAREER SERVICES
Career counseling is available to students during the course of the program as well as after graduation. Our password-protected job listings become available to students once they’ve completed all program requirements.

Because our students learn how to use the medicinal and nutritional aspects of food in addition to acquiring the skills necessary to become chefs, they’re able to carve out highly relevant career paths. They find employment in such areas as:
Health and Wellness Establishments
Personal Chef Services, including special dietary needs
Food Counseling
Teaching
School Lunch Programs / Cafeteria Reform
Food Writing
Product Development
Restaurants -- farm-to-table, plant based, and mainstream
Catering
Alternative Pastry Arts and Baking

Many of our grads are entrepreneurs and have started their own businesses (see Related Sites). Some use our program as an adjunct to what they're currently doing. Doctors, nutritionists, nurses and fitness instructors have all enhanced their practices by incorporating the knowledge they’ve acquired here at NGI. For a thorough look at what our graduates are doing, see Who’s Doing What.
